With a vision to transform into a terminated profession institution, Bengaluru-based edtech startup Masai School has announced its first acquisition of the design institute Design Shift Academy.

While the details of the deal were undisclosed, Prateek Shukla, Co-founder and CEO, Masai School said in a conference with YourStory,

"This is our first step towards transitioning from a pure coding clas into a job clas. This acquisition will help introduce programmes on UI and UX Design, and commodity management." Founded by Preeti Sheokand and Sudhir Mor in 2017, Bengaluru-based Design Shift Academy offers weekend skilling courses in UI/ UX Design. The bootstrapped company started as a home-based business with time eight students, and today has a student base across India and countries like Turkey and Australia.

The company currently has a 15 -member team of designers who work full-time jobs and teach design over the weekends. Speaking of the acquisition, Sudhir told YourStory,

"There seemed a natural fit and alignment with the team at Masai School. We have been in talks for close to a year now. We were doing great in design and wanted to expand into coding, and Masai wanted to expand into scheme. Our logics aligned, thus instead of doing things separately, we thought of joining hands."

Masai School currently offers programs in full-stack web and Android development, and follows the ISA or Income Sharing Agreement model which provides for learners the' study now offer later’ option. In March 2021, the company closed its Series A round for financing at$ 5 million .

This startup is using age-old home remedies to make affordable, chemical-free products

Akshit Goel and Shivangi Goel had just graduated when they decided to brainstorm career plans. Both were aspiring financiers, with a shared inkling towards all things natural and rooted in India.

“We both had construed our elders squandering natural products like multani mitti( Fuller’s earth) and turmeric for their skincare on a regular basis. It was fascinating to see that they maintained their surface so beautifully with only natural products, ” says Akshit, Co-founder and Director at TNW - The Natural Wash.

Taking this as a foundational hypothesi, the duo decided to initiate TNW - The Natural Wash in September 2019.

The Journey

The goal was to introduce consumers to products that are cost-effective, chemical-free and helpful. Many of TNW - The Natural Wash’s products are mixes of age-old recipes that have come together from daily all-important ingredients, be it the Beetroot Lip Balm or the Potato Rice Soap.

[ Startup Bharat] A SaaS-based app to help restaurants control online lineups efficiently

“We initially started tiny with just some handmade soaps, ” remembrances Shivangi, Co-founder and CEO at TNW - The Natural Wash. Charcoal soaps and potato rice soap for oily skin, oats and sugar soap, and soaps made of neem and ubtan were all tried out.

“While many of our family and working friends liked the products, many others had constructive disapproval to pass on too. We didn’t give up, all that feedback stimulated us on. And we are glad we earned our first paycheque thanks to our dear ones, ” reminisces Shivangi.

The startup is a self-funded one, claims Akshit.

“We devoted Rs 2 lakh as initial investment in the business. Growing came from reinvestment of earnings. Every rupee that we have earned was reinvested in the business merely, ” says Akshit.

Taking their business relationship a pace further, the duo got married in January 2021.

According to the founders, most of the chemical-free and Ayurvedic products available in the market are road too costly for a large section of specific populations.

“Our adage is to earn customer satisfaction , not revenue, ” claims Akshit.

The startup is also conscious about TNW products' accomplishes on the environment.

“The way human actions are leading to pollution is outlandish. This is a cause which is very close to our middles, so we try to provide maximum recyclable carton for our concoctions. Challenges faced and the road ahead

“We started from scratch , not formerly, but twice. Setting up a symbol, then facing a lockdown right at the initial theatre and then restarting all over again was not easy. But, we have come a long way now and looking back at our wander feels wonderful. There’s still a long way to go.”
