[Matrix Moments] From Flipkart to building one of India’s largest payment startups: Sameer Nigam recalls PhonePe journey

PhonePe is one of the largest digital remittances players in "the two countries ". As of March this year, it had 15 million sellers on its platform, which it gazes to scale to 25 million by the end of the year.

In a conference with Vikram Vaidyanathan, Managing Director, Matrix Partners India, Sameer Nigam, Co-founder and CEO, PhonePe, spoke about the outing of the digital payments startup. Founded in 2015 by Sameer and Rahul Chari, it all started in 2013 -1 4 on one flooring in Flipkart.

“So when we asked him about whether they’re likely to sell, his reply was:' I’m in my mid-twenties. By the time I’m done, people should be asking us if we’re buying Amazon. That’s the route I want to think about this.

"Then we convened Sachin again in 2010 -1 1 and he spent half an hour on a whiteboard treading Burzin, Rahul, and myself, three-four founders, through his argument of the reasons why ecommerce would be a $25 - $30 billion business by 2020. This was in 2011, ” Sameer remembers.

This thinking of a large market influenced a lot of the decisions at PhonePe in the early days.

“We’d gone through adversity, we’d gone through upsides, we knew where the DNA match and the ease tier were the most prominent. But I felt that for what we wanted to do next I demanded unadulterated toy technologists at the helm. So that was the founding team.”
